Magpie Attack!

Well, the weeks continue to slide by here in Canberra, but I can tell you that my issues with Complex Analysis are no longer a problem – that course has been dropped. The lecturer almost looked relieved that he wouldn’t be needing to drag my knowledge level up to where it needed to be for that course. We both agreed that I needed some more prerequisites before trying to understand Complex Analysis again (despite its difficulty, it was genuinely interesting stuff), and that Leeds is not that nice a city, albeit a more interesting one than Canberra. Meanwhile, my two spectator modules continue as they were, so called because all I need to do in any lecture is sit and watch the slides scroll by rather than make notes, although Matrix Optimisation did reach a new low this week when the lecturer directed us towards the University of New South Wales website as it has better resources than the ANU site.

A generic street somewhere in Canberra
Leeds is never this quiet.

The final module, Number Theory & Cryptography is just as much of a repeat as I’d expected, but our third lecturer to try this term is a big improvement on the second. She had a tendency to not only spell set as “zet”, but also to spell it with a “z”. Not to mention the annoying habit to add an extra legs on “n” and “m”, so that they became “m” and some horrible four legged consonant respectively. He is however, still not as good as the first. If you’ve managed to guess by now that a new blog post means I have an assignment, then give yourself a star! Seven wonderful questions on Number Theory await once this is posted up, so I’m taking my time on it.

On the subject of things that distract from work, Football Manager 2011 is out soon, and on the off-chance that any games journalists read this (or even Miles Jacobson of Sports Interactive), could you send me a test copy please?

Even more exciting that that though is my impending trip to New Zealand, which is taking shape now with almost everything booked up. Just a few days remain until our flight out, though sadly it won’t mark the beginning of my A-League tour.

Bluetongue Stadium, the most impressively located stadium.

With only 11 teams competing in professional football in Australia, travelling to all the league stadiums is a much more achievable target than the 92 grounds in England, so I’m having a go. Sadly though, despite the fact that I’m in Wellington on the day they play Gold Coast United, it’s an away game so they’ll be on the Gold Coast! Guess I will be returning to NZ in the future then!

Otherwise, not a lot is happening. I toyed with the idea of not even mentioning Canberra, and just writing a mini-sports blog here instead this week, with all the latest happenings in F1 and football, but I ran out of steam after posting about it on Offsideref Forums. I’m sure I’ll have plenty to bore you with after my trip to NZ, including our planned walk up Mount Doom!

And finally, I leave you with this, proof that the balance of power between people and animals in Australia is seriously messed up.

Remember, you can get email updates when I make a new post using the little subscribe2 box on the right there.

*Also, if anyone knows html coding to make text smaller, could you help me out?*

Haven’t been on the blog in a while, so just caught up on your last few posts. I’m going to try this betting scam (on rock band though), so I’ll come visit when I make my millions from it :) complex analysis sounded difficult, and its rather odd you don’t have an actual maths department. Jealous your going to nz, I wanna go see the alps there. Good luck with visiting every ground, although there aren’t many, Australia isn’t exactly small. Also, buy me tickets to the gp plz. You planning a visit to billingham anytime soon?

I dunno if you get notified or anything by this, so I’ll post it on fb as well. The betting scam is novel, it works best on the toss of a coin. Complex Analysis is the single most ridiculous course I’ve ever done – from the first lecture he started talking about things I had no idea about.

NZ should be wicked, I’ll let you know how it goes. Every ground shouldn’t be too bad, apart from Perth and Wellington – they’re miles away.

If you make your millions to fly out here, I’ll buy you a ticket to the GP. Or smuggle you in in a large bag or something. There is no Australian billingham :( There is a Stockton beach though.

Also, what html do you need help with? Add I’m looking into alternate subscription methods involving rss feeds, but I’ll get back to you on that one.

I’ll let you know next time. All I can remember atm is “is there a way of making some of the text smaller”, like for captions under the pictures?
